We are committed to supporting our older tenants, and you don’t need to live in housing specifically designed for older people to access help.
If you feel you would benefit from extra support to help you live independently at home, please contact your Housing Officer, who will be happy to discuss the options available.
If you prefer to live in a property with an alarm connected to a 24-hour emergency response system, we can also assist you in finding a suitable home.
Making your home easier to live in
We want to help you remain safe and comfortable in your home for as long as possible.
If you, or anyone living with you, have a disability and are finding it difficult to move around your home or use its facilities, we may be able to help by carrying out adaptations to make your home more accessible.
Who we can help
To receive help from the Adaptations Service, you or anyone living at your home must:
- be a council tenant with Northampton Partnership Homes
- find normal daily living tasks more difficult to carry out
What we provide
We offer advice on:
- equipment and/or adaptations for your home to support your needs
- alternatives if adaptation is not possible
Some properties can’t be easily adapted, perhaps because of the design or location. If this is the case, we will work with you to find a more suitable home for you.
Some typical fixtures and fittings we provide include:
- grab rails and banisters
- level access to your home
- taps and/or handles if yours are difficult to turn
- kitchen and bathroom alterations
To help us decide what kind of help you need, we will assess your needs. In some cases we will also refer your situation to an occupational therapist for further evaluation to ensure we support you and your family to the best of our ability.
We aim to complete all minor adaptations within 28 days of your assessment, depending on the type of work to be carried out.
We will pay the cost of any minor and most major adaptations.
Before you plan any work
It is always a good idea to speak to us before carrying out any work, as works to your home normally require permission. We also may be able to pay for the work. We will only refuse permission if your home is not suited to the work that needs to be done.
If the work is outside, such as a ramp, you may need planning permission from the council. We will be happy to help you with this.
